Our Mission

The mission of Be Like Tom is to promote services and programs for families impacted by Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD); and, specifically, to provide the financial assistance necessary for adults with Autism to attend residential camps and day programs designed for people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Be Like Tom also supports programs that provide caregivers with respite opportunities, and provides access to information families require to guide them through the lifelong journey of caring for a loved one with Autism.

Be Like Tom, Inc. (NFP) is a 501 (c) 3 organization formed in the State of Illinois.

On August 27, 2018, Tom Havens died suddenly just a day after his 58th birthday. He left behind a stunned, heartbroken family and hundreds of dear and devoted friends. 

Tom made everyone he ever met, even the most casual acquaintance, feel treasured. And he did treasure us all. It is a rare and remarkable gift to make everyone you know feel so loved. That was Tom. He devoted his life to his friends and family, and he tirelessly dedicated his time to fundraising and advocating for enhanced services for his son, Jake, and for other families impacted by Autism.  

Among the hundreds of mourners at Tom’s funeral, one said, “The most meaningful thing we can do in memory of Tom is to just “be like Tom.” It is in that spirit and in honor of Tom’s warmth and his kind eyes, which reflected the kindest heart, that Be Like Tom will pursue its mission to promote services and programs for families impacted by Autism; and to provide adults with ASD an opportunity to attend high quality residential camps and day programs, which will enhance their lives while making invaluable respite available to their parent caregivers.
